Initial Screening (Desk Review)
All submitted manuscripts undergo initial screening by the Editor-in-Chief (or Associate Editor). Screening items include:
- Compliance with submission guidelines
- Alignment with Aims & Scope
- Plagiarism/duplicate publication check
Note: Turnitin or equivalent plagiarism detection tools may be used. Manuscripts with similarity scores above 30% may be excluded from review.
Assignment of Reviewers
- Editor-in-Chief selects at least two reviewers with relevant expertise.
- All identifying author information (name, affiliation, acknowledgements) is removed before sending to reviewers.
Conflicts of interest such as:
- Co-authorship within 5 years
- Same institutional affiliation
- Financial connections
- Personal relationships
must be excluded.
First Review Round
Reviewers evaluate manuscripts using the official JSSS Review Form, covering:
- Originality and academic significance
- Methodological appropriateness and validity
- Data reliability and analytical rigor
- Logical flow and clarity of results
- Theoretical and practical contribution
- Adequacy of references
- Writing clarity and structure
Review outcomes:
Revision & Re-Review
- Authors prepare a Response to Reviewers document addressing all comments.
- Revised manuscripts may be re-evaluated by the same or additional reviewers.
- Typically, revision rounds are limited to two.
Final Decision
- The Editor-in-Chief makes the final publication decision after considering reviewers' evaluations and revision progress.
- Upon acceptance, authors submit copyright transfer and license agreement; editorial staff proceed with final proofreading and publication.
- All review records and decision criteria are stored in the journal's official archive.
Situations considered conflicts of interest include:
Co-authorship
Same institution
Financial interest
Personal relationship
Such individuals must recuse themselves from the review process. Editor-in-Chief reviews COI before assigning reviewers and after review completion if needed.
JSSS maintains strict confidentiality throughout the review process.
- Reviewers must not disclose or use manuscript content externally during or after review.
- Author and reviewer identities remain confidential.
- Review records are preserved for at least 5 years and then destroyed.
- JSSS annually publishes peer review statistics (average review duration, number of reviews, acceptance rate, etc.).
- Review procedures, evaluation criteria, and review forms are always publicly accessible on the journal website.
- Reviewer workshops are held regularly to enhance review quality.
- Outstanding reviewers are selected and announced annually.
- All peer reviews must be conducted in strict accordance with the COPE Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers.
- Reviewers must provide respectful and objective feedback; abusive or insulting language is prohibited.
- If inappropriate review behavior or ethics violations occur, the Editor-in-Chief conducts an immediate investigation and may remove the reviewer.
